SPE/GR Workshop: Geothermal and Oil & Gas - Mutual Challenges and Solutions

Description
Save the date -- November 14-15, 2023 in Englewood, Colorado.
Date
Topics

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Geothermal Rising (GR) have developed a workshop to address mutual problems and solutions in the field of Geothermal and Oil & Gas drilling, completions and long-term production. Both industries have been borrowing tools and technologies from each other for decades, and this workshop has been designed as an opportunity to continue to examine possible solutions and delve into issues that have increased well costs and limited productivity. There will be informative presentations including case histories, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities. Attendees are encouraged to engage with their colleagues, share their own experiences and potential solutions.

Session topics to highlight include:

  • High Temperature fracturing fluids and Proppants
  • HT Cementing Developments and Novel Materials
  • Wellbore Temperature Management
  • DOE Geothermal Update and Current Trends

Course Description

This 3-day course will deliver a comprehensive look at geothermal energy, covering basic technical concepts through to commercial and financial considerations. Geothermal energy is defined as “earth heat” and offers a continuous, always on, source of heat and power that is renewable and potentially carbon negative. With current advances in technology, Canada has a vast, untapped, potential for geothermal heat and power.

This course will explore the potential geothermal energy in Canada:

  • Where does geothermal potential exist
  • How to find geothermal energy
  • How to extract geothermal energy
  • What it can geothermal energy be used for
  • How to develop geothermal energy commercially
  • Risks associated with geothermal development
  • Current challenges to geothermal development in Canada

Geothermal Essentials will cover all aspects of geothermal development from greenfield exploration to plant operations and financing. The course instructors include long time geothermal specialists Dick Benoit and Catherine Hickson as well as oil & gas trained Emily Smejkal who is making the transition from oil and gas to geothermal. It is planned to be an introduction to the fundamentals of geothermal energy extraction with special emphasis on sedimentary basins. The wealth of experience of Benoit and Hickson will facilitate a fast and in-depth review over the course of the workshop with enough latitude to delve more deeply into various aspects depending on the interests of the attendees. Significant back up material will be provided for those who wish to dig deeper into specific aspects of geothermal development.

About the Workshop

Geothermal Rising (GR) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) are joining forces again to co-host part two of the workshop on High-Temperature Well Cementing and Integrity.

Part two of this workshop will be held October 7-9, 2021, at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside, San Diego, California. The in-depth workshop will share the latest technical innovations, advancements, and best practices in cementing geothermal and high-temperature wells. All sessions are designed to maximize the exchange of information and ideas between attendees and presenters through technical presentations followed by interactive Q&A periods. In addition, the GR and SPE partnership provides a unique opportunity enabling both industries to share their experiences, technologies, technical procedures, and best practices on this important aspect of well completion.
